Tulip Grove Elementary: 2nd - 4th Grade

When I think of Red Grooms...I think of his amazing works dealing with cities.  My 4th graders created "windows" into apartment buildings.  We created our city street in one of our main hall ways.

3rd grade looked at Dali Salad.  They created self portraits with their head being on a bed of their fav. food. This was done in tempera paint.

2nd grade looked at Ruckus Taxi. They created mixed media taxi using collage & marker.

Andrew Jackson Elementary

2nd grade 3-D self-portraits

Students created their self-portraits and cut them out. Once finished, they thought about a special place and drew the backgroud for their self portraits. Using cardboard pieces, they created a 3-D look by gluing the cardboard in stacks of 2 or more to the back of their self-portraits and then to their backgrounds.

Media used: markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors, cardboard

Kindergarten created and colored their self-portraits through a guided lesson. They then created and painted their backgrounds. When their backgrounds were dry, they cut out their self-portraits and glued them to their backgrounds.

Media used: Crayons, Pencils, Tempera Cakes, Scissors, Glue

4th Grade Pillow Self-Portraits

Students began by drawing their self-portraits on a large sheet of paper. They then transferred their artwork to a piece of fabric pre-cut for them. Most of the students traced their previous drawings. Once finished they used fabric markers and fabric crayons to color their self portraits. Once the pillows were sewn by a volunteer, the students were able to stuff their own pillow. Then they were sewn up to finish the pillow. The students really enjoyed their pillows!

Media used: Pencils, Fabric Markers, Fabric Pencils, Pillow Stuffing

Percy Priest Elementary: 4th Grade Portraits 3-D Reliefs

Art Teacher: Tina Atkinson
After studying several portraits by Red Grooms, 4th grade students began to the identify layers that Grooms used to create the three dimensional effects. Focusing on Dali Salad, student discovered how the layers cast shadow that added to the value and form of the portrait. Then students applied what they had discovered about this layering process and applied it to create there amazing self-portraits. The materials were, file folders, colored pencils, Matt board, and 3-D o's.

Self-portrait collage with food
Mixed-media collage
Inspired by Dali Salad, Peking Delight, and Hamburger Delux all by Red Grooms.
I first got the idea from the blog http://ruthf140.blogspot.com/ , who did collage self-portraits with their favorite books.  After studying Red Grooms works and noticing all the food references, we decided our people would be holding their favorite foods.
